The Return of Tarzan

FIRST EDITION IDENTIFIERS:

A.C. McClurg is printed on the spine and on the title page. There were 7 separate printings of this book by A.C. McClurg. Unlike "Tarzan of the Apes" there really are no differences between the printings other than stating what edition the book is on the title page.

The words "Second Edition" up through "Seventh Edition" can be found midway down on the Title Page. The very first printing does not state first edition on the title page. The total of the 7 printings is 15,000 copies. Also each chapter has a small drawing by J. Allen St. John for a total of 26 headpieces.

The book shown below is a fifth edition.

Of special interest is the existence of the Canadian edition which is identical with the U.S. edition other than it has a different title page tipped in. The words "McClelland, Goodchild and Stewart" appear on the title page instead of "A.C. McClurg".

See photos below of the title page and copyright page and outside covers. Click on the photos to see a large image. The large image of the copyright page shows clearly that it had been tipped in.

REPRINT EDITIONS

A.L. Burt Reprint Editions

From 1916 until 1929 A.L. Burt reprinted this title in a number of variations as shown above. The earliest printings have white lettering and the dust jacket is virtually the same as the first edition jacket; however "A.L. Burt" is printed on the spine. Later versions have black lettering on the covers and spine.
A.L. Burt did not include the date of the printing so many a novice incorrectly assumes the book to be a first edition as the only date listed is the copyright date.

Grosset & Dunlap Reprint Editions

From 1927 until 1967 Grosset & Dunlap reprinted this title in a number of variations with some of them shown above.  Mostly the colors of the books are some hue of red.   Grosset & Dunlap did not include the date of the printing so many a novice incorrectly assumes the book to be a first edition as the only date listed is the copyright date. The age of the book can often be approximated by examing the advertisements in the back of the book for other Edgar Rice Burroughs titles.
