The Son of Tarzan

FIRST EDITION IDENTIFIERS:

A.C. McClurg is printed on the spine. A.C. McClurg made four printings of this title for a total of 32,000 copies.
The first and second printings have "1917" on the title page. The third and fourth printings have "1918" on the title page.

The earliest state does not include a dedication page to "Hulbert Burroughs". The 2nd, 3rd and 4th printing do have the dedication page (located after the copyright page). "W.F. Hall" is printed on the copyright page of the first, second, and third printing but is lacking on the fourth printing. There are illustrations by J. Allen St. John intermixed with text throughout.

As "1917" appears on the Title Page above it indicates this book to be a first or second printing. The photo on the right shows this book to be the first state of the first edition as it lacks a dedication page to "Hulbert Burroughs".

Above is a reproduction of the first edition dust jacket.

REPRINT EDITIONS

A.L. Burt Reprint Editions

From 1918 until 1928 A.L. Burt reprinted this title in a number of variations as shown above. The lettering on the front cover and spine is in black. "A.L. Burt" is printed on the spine and title page.  A.L. Burt did include the date of the printing so many a novice incorrectly assumes the book to be a first edition as the only date listed is the copyright date.

Grosset & Dunlap Reprint Editions

From 1927 until 1943 Grosset & Dunlap reprinted this title in a number of variations with some of them shown above. Mostly the colors of the books are some hue of red. Grosset & Dunlap did not include the date of the printing so many a novice incorrectly assumes the book to be a first edition as the only date listed is the copyright date. The age of the book can often be approximated by examing the advertisements in the back of the book for other Edgar Rice Burroughs titles.
